Busting Nutrition Superstitions: A Friday the 13th Guide

The 1990s were a wild time for nutrition. The fat-free craze had taken over, and we were all convinced that fat was the enemy. Food companies jumped on the bandwagon, stripping everything from cookies to potato chips of their fat content (and adding a ton of sugar to make them taste somewhat edible).

I was a teenager during this time, completely brainwashed by the idea that cutting out ALL fat was the key to weight loss. Picture me, wandering the grocery store aisles, loading my cart with fat-free potato chips, pretzels, and sugary candies, truly believing I was making healthy choices. After all, they were fat-free! They had to be good for me, right?

Wrong. So very wrong.

The Fat-Free Fantasy

Here’s what nobody told us during the great fat-free frenzy: our bodies need healthy fats to function. We’re talking hormone production, nutrient absorption, and yes – even weight management. When we strip our diet of healthy fats, we often replace them with sugar and refined carbs (hello, fat-free cookies), which is exactly what I was doing. It wasn’t until I worked with a nutritionist in college that I learned the truth about fats and their essential role in our health.

The Calorie Confusion

Speaking of misguided beliefs, let’s talk about the “all calories are equal” myth. I used to think 100 calories of anything was the same as 100 calories of everything else. Spoiler alert: your body processes 100 calories of broccoli very differently than 100 calories of candy. It’s not just about the number – it’s about the nutrients (or lack thereof) that come with those calories.

The Metabolism Myth

“Eat every 2-3 hours to keep your metabolism firing!” If I had a dollar for every time I’ve heard this one… Here’s the truth: your metabolism isn’t a campfire that needs constant stoking. Your body is remarkably sophisticated and doesn’t need you to feed it like clockwork to keep functioning. Focus on balanced, satisfying meals when you’re hungry, not on watching the clock.

The Sweat Equation

One more thing that needs to die: the idea that if you’re not sweating, you’re not working hard enough. I can’t tell you how many times I hear people discount their strength training or yoga sessions because “I barely broke a sweat!”

Here’s the truth: Some of the most effective workouts – like strength training or mobility work – might barely break a sweat. You could be doing heavy deadlifts that transform your body composition or working on crucial mobility that prevents injury, and you might not need to change your shirt. Meanwhile, you could sweat buckets just sitting in a sauna or walking outside on a humid day.

Sweat is your body’s cooling mechanism, not a measure of calories burned or workout effectiveness. What really matters? Proper form, progressive overload, consistency, and choosing workouts that align with your goals. So stop discounting those “dry” workouts – they might be doing more for your body than you think!
